Class 2 Information

 

Hi Class 2,

 

I am really looking forward to teaching you all and getting to know you and your families.

 

Here is some information for you:

 

Please come to school each day with the correct uniform and shoes, a healthy snack (no nuts or fruit flavoured things please) and a freshly filled water bottle (with a sports style lid if possible to prevent spillages).

 

If it is sunny please come with sun-cream applied and a hat. If it is rainy or cold, please come with a suitable coat, hat, gloves etc.

 

Children can come to school in PE kit on days when they have PE (Tuesday and Friday). PE kit consists of a white T-shirt, trainers, blue or black shorts or blue or black track-suit.

 

Children will have Forest Schools for a period of time on Fridays. Wellies and waterproofs can be worn over PE kits.

 

Miss Walster will teach Class 2 on Fridays. Miss Moss will help particular children for the start of each day and Mrs Stevenson will be in the class for part of Wednesday and Thursdays. There may be times when there is other support in the class throughout the year and I am looking forward to welcoming any parent helpers as soon as we are able to do so!

 

Reading books will be changed on Mondays and Thursdays when needed. I strongly encourage children to read their reading books at least three times up to Turquoise book band to support the understanding, fluency and expression in reading. Children should be reading for at least ten minutes at least 4 times each week. Reading anything in addition to children's school book can be recorded in their organiser and I love to hear about any exciting things that have been read. Extra reading can include anything: BUG Club, favourite picture books, longer books, online articles, cereal packets, instructions for games, birthday cards..... the possibilities are endless! Reading at school will take place in many different ways, and although there will be times that I record it in organisers, there will also be times that I ask children to read something to me as I am working with them and moving around the classroom. I will ensure that all children will have read something to me during the week and consider it extremely important to know how each child is progressing.

 

Spellings will go home and be tested on Fridays, unless unconfirmed timetable arrangements require this to change. Spellings will be worked on in the classroom to help children learn how to retain and really know them. This is much more important than simply learning spellings for a test. Children will record how many spellings they get in their organisers but I will be more concerned about their use of them in their day to day work as that is the important bit! Other homework will be introduced gradually and I will inform you of this.

 

It is expected that children will be taking their Year 1 Phonics screening assessment nearer the end of the Autumn Term instead of last term, as last year and information and resources will be sent home to support this.

 

Year 2 is also a key assessment year where children take Standard Attainment Tests (SATs). Tests or 'Special Work' as I prefer to refer to them are taken in Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar, Reading Comprehension, Maths Arithmetic and Maths Reasoning. These usually take place around May and I will provide more information about this year's arrangements later on in the year. These tests are teacher assessed rather than purely test based to provide an accurate account of a child's attainment. I prepare children for them throughout the year and carry them out as informally as fun as I can. Children usually look forward to them and enjoy them as drinks, biscuits and play are used as incentives! Please do not worry about these at all, they are not as scary as they sound!
