Monday 5th September

Hello everybody! I hope everyone had a fantastic summer holiday - we certainly had the weather for it!

We have had a super start to the term. I was really impressed with how well the children have settled in already! It certainly helps that I know most of you so well already! Mrs Whitehouse enjoyed meeting you all on Friday too! Our topic this half term is AWESOME AFRICA - please see the topic overview on the main page for all the curriculum areas we will be learning - I will try to stick to this as much as possible but it may change slightly.

Reading books will be changed on Mondays - Please get into a pattern of hearing your child read at least 4-5 times per week. I cannot emphasise how very important this is - reading is definitely the key to accessing all areas of the curriculum and that daily practice is invaluable. I will also hear your child read once a week during Guided Reading sessions. I have popped the AFRICA Homework Menu on the webpage and I am really looking forward to seeing you extending your learning at home. I have also put key objectives in the Maths and English homework section to work on at home. e.g. times tables, key words. You will be pleased to hear that we will NOT be doing spelling tests this year - instead spelling practice will be incorporated into daily English sessions. Regular practise of key words is still very important though (see English Homework page). I may also send home an extra maths sheet to reinforce learning we have done in school.

In March, Year 2's will be going on a Residential Trip to Beaumanor Hall for an overnight stay - I am super excited about this as I think we get to be pirates for a day! Arrr-haarr! An information meeting will be arranged to inform parent about this trip nearer the time.

Year 2 is also a key assessment year where children take Standard Attainment Tests (SATs). These 'Special Booklets' are taken in Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar, Reading Comprehension, Maths Arithmetic and Maths Reasoning. These usually take place around May and I will provide more information later on in the year. These tests are teacher assessed rather than purely test based to provide an accurate account of a child's attainment. I prepare children for them throughout the year and carry them out as informally and as fun as I can. Please do not worry about these at all, they are not as scary as they sound!
