Class 6

WELCOME TO YEAR 6 2023-24!

Spring Term

Curriculum

This term, we have a jam-packed curriculum of exciting learning opportunities including:

English

We will be reading and writing story settings and narrative stories based on our Frozen Kingdom topic. We will be focusing on sentence structure, technical vocabulary and key punctuation to support progress in writing at the top end of the school. We are now looking for independence in writing as secondary education looms ever closer.

Maths

Our Maths is taught based on the White Rose Maths scheme and this is organised into blocks as follows: Converting units of measurements, Ratio, Proportion, Fractions, Decimals and Percentages. We will also be focusing on mental arithmetic strategies, times tables and reasoning.

There will also be a daily "Flash Back 4" which is a brilliant and fast-paced 5 minute activity that keeps all of the other areas of Maths fresh in our minds.

RE

In RE we will be focusing on the people of God and how they impacted on God's will.

People Skills

This term we will be looking at how the children can become amazing citizens of the future using our new 'Kapow' scheme of work. A fantastic opportunity to use vital people skills as we work through the term.

Science : Electrical circuits

In the Electrical Circuits and Components project, your child will consolidate their understanding of the components that make up a circuit, such as a lamp, cell, wire and switch. They will make a range of circuits and use symbols to draw circuit diagrams. Your child will learn about electric currents and measure the voltage of different cells. They will discover how cells produce electricity and research questions about cells and batteries. Your child will also learn how the voltage across a circuit affects the performance of different components. They will explore how programmable devices are used in everyday life and create a program to switch a light on and off via a light sensor. They will use the knowledge gained throughout the project to design, make and evaluate a programmable home device.

Geography

In the Frozen Kingdoms project, your child will learn about the regions of the Arctic and Antarctic. They will learn about the similarities and differences between these two regions, including the climate, landscape and natural resources. They will learn how to use grid references, lines of latitude and longitude, contour lines and symbols to identify the geographical locations of the Arctic and Antarctic, and how these, along with the tilt of the Earth, affect day length and warmth. They will investigate polar oceans to learn how they differ from other oceans on Earth and how climate change increases Earth's temperature and leads to rising sea levels. They will learn about the indigenous people of the Arctic, including how their lives have changed over time, and about the positives and negatives of tourism in Antarctica. They will also learn about classifying animals, animal adaptations and evolution, and polar exploration and discovery.

Art - Inuits

This project is linked to Frozen Kingdoms and will look at Inuit art and sculptures

DT - Eat the Seasons

PE : football and gymnastics

Pupils will be focusing on athletic skills iin football, accuracy, passing and game situations as well as learning new gymnastic techniques.

Music: A New Year Carol

Computing

This term's topic will be delivered by Mr Mazzotti

Staffing

As well as Mr Heaps in class there will also be the wonderful Mrs Lowings who knows the class extremely well from Y5. She is amazing and will always be available, along with Mr Heaps to chat with any child should they have any worries or concerns about anything. She will work every morning in Class 6. Mrs Jackson and Mr Mazzotti will also be supporting the class on Tuesday afternoons with PE and Computing whilst Mr Heaps is planning his wonderful lessons for the next week.

The ‘Good to be Green’ behaviour system will continue as usual across the school with children starting each morning and afternoon on a green card. Class Dojos can be earnt by children for doing what is expected throughout the day, with Class Dojos of the Week being displayed in the class. Gold cards can be earnt by going above and beyond what is expected in work, behaviour or attitude. Dojo and Smarty Pants of the week awards will be handed out every Friday afternoon.

Platinum Cards are awarded for going way above and beyond and for really wowing! A prize can be chosen on receipt of a Platinum and a certificate and prize will be presented in Thursday’s Celebration Assembly in front of the whole school. House points are also awarded for Platinum Cards and they will be displayed on the website Platinum page.
