Class 1

WELCOME TO CLASS 1 2023-24!

Moving up to class 1 the children can fully immerse themselves in the National Curriculum by engaging in a selection of interesting subjects. In class 1, children are given the opportunity to develop their independence further. The enhanced provision and exploration element is present with a balance of structured-based learning. The children will be excited by the amount of knowledge they can gain during their time in class 1.  

Spring Term Learning: 

English 

This term in Class 1 English, your child will be immersing themselves in the enchanting world of traditional tales, honing their storytelling skills and showcasing their super adjectives in character and setting descriptions. Additionally, we're delving into factual recounting and informative writing, and igniting their creativity through calligram poems, fostering a well-rounded and engaging language learning experience.

Maths

This term, your child will be exposed to numbers up to 20. Your child will continue to develop their understanding of numbers and will practice adding and subtracting with greater numbers. Your child will find more number bonds and find doubles. Your child will also learn about measuring with cubes and cm whilst understanding the importance of starting at 0 on a ruler. Your child will explore mass and volume with the water tray and other practical resources to consolidate their learning. Our selection of practical resources will be used throughout the year to provide scaffolds for your child. 

Religious Education

In Religious Education, your child will learn about some of the parables in the bible, including The Lost Son and The Good Samaritan. By exploring these parables, your child will begin to unpick the hidden meanings within them. Your child will then be able to apply some of their understanding to their own values whilst linking them to the school's Christian values. We will also look at ourselves and how to care for ourselves and others whilst making connections with bible stories. We will identify what makes us unique and what makes the people around us special.  

People Skills

Citizenship and Econmonic Wellbeing. Your child will be exploring how to care for themselves and others. They will also look into how to care for animals and babies. They will explore the British value: Democracy. This will encourage children to understand that their voice is to be heard and that their opinions matter. The Economic strand will look at money and how adults earn money. Your child will help to share ideas on how to keep money safe. 

Family Week: As part of our People Skills curriculum, we teach children in each year group a comprehensive and inclusive Relationship, Sex and Health Education Programme, which complements our Christian values. The focus of this learning will take place during Family Week (TBC), where children in Year 1 will be taught the following, in line with DfE statutory guidance:

Science

In the Seasonal Changes project, your child will learn about the four seasons. They will go out into the local environment to experience the weather. They will examine the difference between deciduous and evergreen trees, observing trees in the local environment. They will learn about how the seasons affect animals and make comparisons between them. They will find out what the weather is, what types of weather there are and what causes the weather. They will learn about what the weather is like in each season and discover why the lengths of daytime and night time change in different seasons. They will learn about the Sun and how to protect their skin from the Sun’s rays. They will observe and measure the wind, recording their data on a bar chart. They will learn how to read the temperature from a thermometer and record temperatures over a series of days. They will measure rainfall and carry out an investigation into the rain. They will learn about weather forecasts and symbols.

History and Geography 

In the Bright Lights, Big City project, your child will learn the story of a local landmark. They will learn about the countries that make up the United Kingdom, including their location, capital cities and some of their physical and human features. They will have the opportunity to do map work, using compasses and positional and directional language to plan routes around London. They will research the cause and impact of the Great Fire of London and look at some famous London landmarks. They will learn about other capital cities around the world, including Kuala Lumpur, and compare how they are similar and different to London. They will also learn about the Great Fire of London. 

Art 

This project teaches children about collagraph printing, including how to develop a motif to make single and repeated prints.

Design and Technology 

In Design and Technology, your child will learn about wheels, axles and chassis and how they work together to make a vehicle move. Class 1 will explore how all vehicles have a wheel and axle to move. 

Physical Education 

Your child will explore Zumba with catchy music and excellent dance moves. They will also be partaking in Gymnastics where they will learn a selection of stretches and rolls including pike, straddle, egg roll, pencil roll. Your child will participate in aerobics to focus on large muscle groups to strengthen and become active in rhythmic and repetitive activities. Team Games will help your child to develop the social aspect of physical education and they will get the chance to immerse themselves in a variety of team games. As the weather gets warmer, your child will be able to enjoy the outdoors for their outdoor and adventure PE lessons. During outdoors and adventures, they will develop their problem-solving skills whilst working in small teams and acquiring new leadership skills.  

Music

Your child will enjoy some catchy repetitive songs to join in with. During music lessons, your child will use their voice and also be introduced to the glockenspiels. The children will begin to learn how to play notes C and D (and F later in the term). Your child will be introduced to a variety of different musical styles and instruments. Your child will learn about pitch and how to change their voice to match a pitch.

Behaviour

We have Class Dojos. Class Dojos are little monsters that children can earn points for. Dojos can be given to children for doing what is expected throughout the day and also for doing at least 4x reads at home.

The ‘Good to be Green’ behaviour system is present across the school with children starting each morning on a green card. Gold cards are earned by going above and beyond what is expected in work, behaviour or attitude.

Platinum Cards are on the 'Good to be Green' behaviour system and are awarded for going above and beyond. If a child receives a Platinum award, they will receive a certificate during Thursday's celebration assembly. House points are awarded for Platinum Cards, and they will be displayed on the website's Platinum page. 

Yellow cards are a warning for not behaving as expected and red cards will be given if this warning is not heeded. If your child receives a red card, you will be informed. The red cards are an opportunity to reflect on their behaviour.

A standard week in class one:

(The timetable is a standard week, however changes are sometimes made due to extra-curricular activities which happen from time to time). 

Books

'Book band books' will be changed every Monday.

Read, Write Inc Phonics Books are changed every Monday. 

 

PE Days 

Monday and Wednesday. Please can children come in PE kits ready for PE on these days.
